Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a Veterinary Behaviourist?
A veterinarian behaviourist is a veterinarian who has undergone additional training in the area of animal behaviour. Along with their medical knowledge, they also have an indepth knowledge of how animal's brains work and how important their emotions can be in determining how an animal behaves. They are able to help animals who are experiencing stress, anxiety or fear which may be hindering them from progressing with a traditional trainer. Through the use of a modern, positive, scientific based approach, an integrated management plan can be created for your pet's individualised needs. As we are also a veterinarian, we can also ensure we consider any underlying medical problems your pet has and how it might affect their behaviour.
What type of training do you use?
As a veterinary behaviourist we understand the impact that negative emotions can have on your pets success and future behaviour. For this reason, only positive reinforcement is used with our patients.
What is positive reinforcement training?
Positive reinforcement training refers to the use of a reward such as a treat to encourage a pet to repeat the desired behaviour. An example of this is when we might give a dog a treat once they sit. By using a reward we are able to increase the speed in which an animal learns something new as well as creating a positive association with it. Other rewards that are used include verbal praise, petting or even toys.
Do you see cats?
Yes we do. Cats can also experience behaviour changes and we are here to assist you with your concerns. We can help with common issues such as toileting outside the litter box, biting, fighting between cats, urine marking and introducing a new cat to the household.
